🛠️ How to Document Your BMX Decals (So We Can Recreate Them Perfectly)
If you’re restoring a classic Mongoose, GT, Redline, Haro, or any old-school BMX — chances are the decals are faded, cracked, or gone altogether.
This guide shows you how to photograph and document them the right way — so we can recreate them perfectly.
📦 What You’ll Need
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| Smartphone with a good camera | Capture high-res images |
| Tracing paper + masking tape | Copy decal outlines |
| Ruler or measuring tape | Helps with accurate scaling |
| Pencil (soft lead) | Doesn’t damage paint |
| Plain paper + pen | For model notes and info |
🧽 Step 1: Prep the Bike
- Clean the decals – remove grime or oil
- Use a white or plain background
- Place the bike upright or on a stand
- Use natural daylight – no flash
- Have a ruler ready
📸 Step 2: Photograph the Decals
✅ What to capture:
- Full bike shot – both sides
- Close-ups of each decal
- Include ruler in frame
- Zoom in on detail (fading, foil, outlines)

❌ What to avoid:
- Angles or skewed shots
- Flash glare or reflections
- Missing ruler or measurements
- Clutter in background
✍️ Step 3: Tracing the Decals
Tracing is optional but really helpful — especially for curved tubes or faded decals.
- Tape tracing paper gently over decal
- Trace outlines and interior shapes
- Label decal location and size reference

📝 Step 4: Add Notes
Please include as much info as possible:
- Brand, model, year of the bike
- Original paint colour or decal finish
- Are decals OEM or aftermarket?
- Any custom requests (e.g. “change colour to black chrome”)
